Panthera tigris sumatrae

Did you know that no two tigers have the same patterns? Each tiger has different markings; even the stripes on one side of a tiger's body are different to those on its other side.

The Sumatran Tiger is the smallest surviving subspecies of tiger. They live in forests where they eat deer and wild pigs. Like other tigers they will lie half-submerged in lakes or ponds during the heat of the day.

With less than 400 animals remaining in the wild, the Sumatran tigers at the Dubbo Western Plains Zoo are part of the Australasian and European management program for this critically endangered species.

In Bahasa Indoesia, the Sumatrian Tiger is called Harimau.
